Presentation transcript:

Electromagnetic Radiation Light energy Electromagnetic Radiation

Light Energy Like sound: Light travels in waves that have certain wavelengths and frequencies Its speed is different in different materials It can be reflected or absorbed, or it can pass through an object

Light Energy Unlike Sound: Light is not a vibration Light can travel through a vacuum Light travels more slowly through water and air Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation

Electromagnetic Radiation Light is a combination of electrical and magnetic energy Visible light is only a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum

How does Light Move? In our experience Light moves in straight lines It can REFLECT (bounce) off an object It can REFRACT (bend) when it moves through an object PRISM water

Light Absorption Colored materials and filters can absorb light Some colors absorb more light than others When light is absorbed the energy is changed into thermal energy
