Presentation transcript:

Circulatory and Respiratory Systems How do we breath and carry that oxygen to our bodies?

Functions of Circulatory System Delivers oxygen to cells Brings nutrients to cells Gets rid of waste materials

Blood vessels Arteries carry blood containing oxygen from heart to body. Arteries are strong, durable vessels that can withstand high pressure of movement Capillaries are smaller vessels which allow diffusion of material into cells Veins are passageways which carry blood that lacks oxygen back to the heart Some contain valves which prevent blood from flowing backward

The heart and movement of blood Heart is a hollow organ made of cardiac muscles that pump blood throughout your body Made of four chambers Heart beats in two phases Flow is in two loops

Example of flow

Heart Videos how the heart works Circulation of blood through the body

Components of blood Plasma Red Blood cells Platelets White blood cells

Function of Respiratory System To carry oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide

Pathways Include nasal passages, pharynx, epiglottis, trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, and diaphragm Air enters mouth or nose and passes into upper throat(pharynx), then moves through flap of tissue called epiglottis, and into the larynx From the larynx, air moves into your windpipe, trachea, and through a large tube called the bronchi which takes the oxygen to your lungs Gas exchange occurs in tiny air sacs called alveoli located inside the lungs Capillaries surround the lungs so that oxygen can diffuse into bloodstream

Breathing Is this a conscious action? How is it regulated?

Disorders Asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer, emphysema, pneumonia, and TB
