Glazing What to Remember

Underglazes Apply at the bonedry and bisque stages of clay Mix like paint (slightly different) Darken when fired Matte finish Low fire Δ05 (1904°F) Not waterproof

Glazes Apply at the bisque stage of clay only Chemicals: do NOT mix Earth tone colors Glossy finish High fire Δ5 (2201°F) Waterproof

4 ways to glaze a pot are: Brush (in class, hardest way) Dip (in class, second best way) Spray (best way) Pour

3 main ingredients in glaze are: Silica (SiO2): 75% - glass substance to coat, waterproof and create glossy finish Water (H2O): helps glaze adhere to clay until fired (makes application easier) Flux (exp. Soda ash or limestone): reduces melting temperature of silica (3182°F to 2732°F) and reduces softening temperature to 1832°F.

2 Reasons to Glaze What is Wax used for? Decoration Waterproof Prevent glaze from sticking to the clay (used in decoration and on bottom of pot so it does not stick to shelf during firing)

Define Glaze Noun: chemical liquid used to decorate and waterproof pottery Verb: to apply glaze to pottery through application processes To fire in a second “Glaze firing”

Steps to PROPERLY glaze a pot: remove dust allow to dry wax mix glaze dip once let dry touch up wipe off waxed areas put on correct shelf clean
