AGENDA What are AWUBs and how can they improve my writing?   -“When I was Little…” -AWUBS: how to lengthen syntax, and grammar rules. -AWUBS write -Closing: write down a sentence about creative writing and use ONE AWUBS.

What will we learn today? What are AWUBs and how can they improve my writing?

MENTOR TEXT: “When I Was Little” Listen to me read the picture book… What phrase is repeating in this story? Write your own set of, “When I was little,” statements in your writer’s notebook. Examples: When I was little, raccoons were the most terrifying animals to ever exist. When I was little, a kool-aid mustache was standard. When I was little, we went to the ER a lot. When I was little, the summers seemed to last forever.

WHEN I WAS LITTLE Share your list with a partner…as your partner shares, see if there is anything you could add on… Now, pick one and write about it in your writer’s notebook…

MENTOR SENTENCES What are we noticing with these mentor sentences? Unless I finished my entire dinner, my parents wouldn’t let me play outside with my neighbors. Since I had three other siblings, I always had someone I could talk to, make fun of, or harass. Because children are ignorant about a lot of things, I often wish I could go back to being young again.

MENTOR SENTENCES What are some rules or ways we could mimic these sentences? Unless I finished my entire dinner, my parents wouldn’t let me play outside with my neighbors. Since I had three other siblings, I always had someone I could talk to, make fun of, or harass. Because children are ignorant about a lot of things, I often wish I could go back to being young again.

INDEPENDENT/DEPENDENT CLAUSE What is an dependent clause? An incomplete sentence. It doesn’t make sense, or has an incomplete thought. What is a independent clause? A complete sentence. It makes sense, and flows properly. Fill in the boxes.

INDEPENDENT/DEPENDENT CLAUSE What is an dependent clause While my mom made dinner  Before I saw the book fly towards my face If you have ever eaten a hot pepper What is an independent clause? I was a wild child It was funny

AAAWWWUBBIS GRAMMAR NOTES—copy what shows up on the powerpoint…

AAAWWWUUBBIS WORDS Although After As long as They are words that… Whenever While When Until Unless Because Before If Since They are words that… 1. Start off a dependent clause (meaning its incomplete, it needs more information) 2. They can introduce an idea or add more information to a sentence 3. They need a comma.

Make your own—on Notes page Look through your SSR book and find me an AWUBs sentence—write it on your notes page. Now, you try—write your own AWUBS sentences but use another AWUBS besides “When…” Share!

AAAWWWUBBIS PHRASE It’s a phrase that starts off with an AAAWWWUBBIS word. The trick is to find the “natural pause,” then add the comma. Although the summer is over, I enjoy teaching during the fall.

Your Revision Look back at your “when I was little” write… Revise it, and add THREE AWUBS sentences. Make sure they flow, make sense, and use the comma. Rewrite on your packet!

WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY Give me an AWUBS sentence about creative writing! Homework: The AWUBS packet if you didn’t finish is due tomorrow!
