Multiplication and Division Strategies

Learning Goals: To select and apply efficient mental and written multiplication and division strategies. To use a calculator to check the answers to calculations. To make estimates for these computations.

These are multiplication strategies you have explored before. Take your time to read over all of the strategies. Create a think board like this one for 76 x 28

Multiplication Problems Read the worded problems below and show your thinking using the different multiplication strategies. In the library, there are three large bookcases each with 8 shelves. If each shelf can take 47 books, how many books are there in the library? 215 people buy tickets for the school play. They pay £15 each for the tickets. How much money did the school raise? The Olympic cycling team is training hard. They each cycle 126km every day for 15 days. There are 8 people on the team. What is the total distance they cycled in the 15 days? The recipe for 1 banana and raspberry smoothie needs 65g of raspberries. Sarah’s mum is making smoothies for the whole class of 28 children. What is the weight of raspberries she will need in grams. What is the weight in kilograms? Tom pours some drinks for his friends. He opens a carton of apple juice and pours six 125ml glasses and three 250ml glasses. The carton is now empty. How much did the carton hold? *** Check your answers using a calculator. If you made an error, have a go at improving your working out to find the correct answer***
