Q3,J3

Ethos, Pathos, Logos Three rhetorical appeals Rhetorical = related to the art of rhetoric (using language) Three tools that you can use to make your language more persuasive to your listener / reader.

Ethos From the Greek meaning “character”. In rhetoric, ethos is concerned with expertise. Data, quotes from scientists, experts in the specific field Endorsements from celebrities Quotes from respected historical figures Example: Today’s journal prompt

Pathos From the Greek meaning “suffering” or “experience” Relates to the emotions of the listener / reader. Shocking / disturbing images Emotionally-charged language Placing guilt on the listener / reader Instilling fear / anger / outrage / sadness

Logos From the Greek meaning “an opinion” or “a plea”. Logos appeals to the logical nature of the listener / reader. Logical reasons for your argument Facts, statistics Logical consequences Example: All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal. (Aristotle) After you have crafted your logos, you must check it for fallacies…be ready for that on Wednesday!

Time to work on your draft…. Which of the three rhetorical appeals would be most effective on your audience? Focus on that one. However, I need to see evidence of all three in your letter. Introduction: Pathos Confirmation: Logos Summation: Ethos
