Answering Text Based CRAs RAFT

What is a CRA? A Constructed Response Answer is based on a text you read. There are two types of answers: Literal- The answer is right in the text Infer- You have to use clues in the text to help you infer the answer. Before you write an answer, you have to closely read the text to find the evidence to come up with your answer. Today, we will do that with the text and CRA’s you did on Friday?

CRA 1 Why did the King marry Sogolon? Use details from the text to support your answer. Before we can find the answer , we have to understand the question. A why question asks for a cause or reason something happened. Let’s read the text and see if we can find evidence. After I read the whole text for gist, or general understanding, I closely read to find evidence. Reread paragraph 1 to yourselves and underline what might be evidence Literal

Restate the question as a statement Answer the question Writing RAFT Once you have mentally figured out your answer, You use RAFT as a structure Restate the question as a statement Answer the question Facts and details from the text to support your answer Tell how your evidence supports your answer COPY into your ELA notebook now you try to answer using RAFT

Sample Answer The King married Sogolon because he wanted a son. According to the text, the wise men told him to marry Sogolon who would give him a son, who would one day become a great king and powerful warrior. Thus, having a son to have his family continue to rule was the reason. Transitions

Your turn- Why did Sogolon cry? Use details from the text to support your answer.

Frame RAFT Sogolon cried because _____________________ . According to the text, ________________________________________________ _________________. The text evidence shows ______________________________________________ ________________________________.

Day 2 Infer CRA answers What did we learn about answering CRA’s yesterday? Turn and talk. Today we are going to answer questions where we have to make an inference. An inference is made by using clues and knowledge we already have.

Why do you think Sassouma was livid when she heard the news? Use details to support your answer. Let’s go back to text and see if we can find clues. Now you try to write your answer using RAFT

Sassouma was livid because______________ Frame Sassouma was livid because______________ According to the text __________________ __________________________________ These details show that ________________________________ Look at your answer from yesterday

Now you try Why do you think Sundiata returned home to Mali? Use details to support your answer. Think tells you that yout have to infer.

FRAME- RAFT Sundiata returned home to Mali because he wanted to save his people from the evil King Sumanguru. According to the text Mali was conquered by an evil King Sumanguru. He made the people of Mali miserable. The evidence shows that Sundiata cared about his people and that is why he came back.

Show what you know Why did Sogolon leave Mali? Use details from the text to support your answer. Why do you think the people of Mali supported Sundiata against Sumunguru? Use details from the text to support your answer. (hint closely read paragraph 5 for text evidence to support your inference)
