Voting Requirements for Americans In order to vote in the United States each government has established that each citizen must meet before casting their ballot. Use the concept web below to identify the requirements used by the State Governments.
Universal Rquirements (Every state uses these requirements)
CITIZENSHIP -Aliens- Foreign born residents who have not become citizens-are generally denied the right to vote. -
RESIDENCE One must be a legal resident of the state in which he or she wishes to cast a ballot. ( Most states require you to live there for a period of time) - States adopted residency to prevent corrupption ( 1.Shipping in voters 2.Allow new voters to become familiar with candidates.
AGE The 26th Amendment allows persons 18 years of age and older to vote. - No state may set an age higher than 18 for any election. ( They could set it lower) -Until this Amendment was adopted 21 was the minimum voting age. The push to change the voting age started in the 1940s but was not passed until 1971. (Fastest an amendment was ratified.) “Old enough to fight, Old enough to vote.”

-49 states require that a voter be registered. (N. Dakota) REGISTRATION -49 states require that a voter be registered. (N. Dakota) -Registration is a procedure of voter identification intended to prevent voter fraudulent voting.
LITERACY -Today, no state has a suffrage qualifications based on voter literacy. ( A person’s ability to read and write) -In the past they would use the literacy test to make sure a person was able to cast an informed ballot. - It was also used to discriminate voters of certain groups. ( African Americans, Native Americans)
TAX PAYMENT -Property ownership, proved by the payment of property taxes, was once a very common suffrage qualification. -For many years they also required that a person pay a Poll Tax, as a condition to voting. This was also used to discourage African Americans from voting.
PERSONS DENIED THE VOTE - A democratic government can only exist when the right to vote is very widely held. Still, every State does purposely deny the vote to certain persons. ( all states-No persons in mental instituition, ¼ states-persons who commit a serious crime, few- discharged from the armed forces.)
