Introducing Quotes Quote Bombs and Incorporating Quotes

OREO Method Effectively integrating quotes Introduce Quote Explain significance

OREO Layer 1: Introduction To introduce a quotation smoothly into your own essay, provide the reader with a clear context that sets up your quote. You can do this by using a context sentence or attribution. Context Sentence: John becomes angry and sticks up for his wife, Elizabeth, when Abigail insults her: “You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth! (Miller 22). Attribution: John Proctor exclaims, “You’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth!” (Miller 20).

OREO Layer 2: Quotation Quote With the introduction as your context, you’re ready to quote! Quote

OREO Layer 3: Relation/Significance When using a quotation, you need to clarify the quotations significance to your topic. Question what the author says Restate it Criticize it Disagree with it Show how it relates to your experience or to another concept Explain the significance

OREO Example When Shaq O’Neal was asked for his opinion regarding Topic Sentence: Furthermore, these new age requirements have stirred up controversy within the NBA. When Shaq O’Neal was asked for his opinion regarding the league’s newly proposed age requirements, he stated, “What is it that college teaches you? College don’t really teach you to be a great NBA player on and off the court. College teaches you about college. What can better teach you about dealing with the NBA than the NBA?” (Robbins 3). Like Shaq, most players who currently belong to the NBA’s player’s association are adamantly against new age requirements. They feel that the league can prepare the player for their career better than the college game can.
