Remember it’s a Comedy With literature, comedy doesn’t mean laugh-out-loud funny, rather it means: a plot designed to provide enjoyment written in a light, familiar, bantering, and/or satirical style It begins in difficulty, involves its characters in amusing situations, and ends happily—but not all comedies are humorous and lighthearted (especially not 100% of the time) It differs from burlesque/farce: comedy has a more closely knit plot, more sensible and intelligent dialogue, and more plausible characterization It often stresses some oddity or incongruity of character, speech, or action—perhaps through caricature or exaggeration

Use a Bilateral Lens Subtle Humor Explicit Humor Often missed, but always present. Look for this mainly in the dialogue: Puns Witty banter Verbal irony A more “slapstick” type of humor. Look for this in the characterization and plot: Caricature Parody Situational irony

Use your RJ Questions Warning! Don’t wait until the end of each volume to answer the RJ questions: These should be present in your mind during every chapter, every paragraph, every sentence, even every phrase. Capture your thoughts, ideas, questions, answers, etc. AS THEY COME to you. Your RJ should always be present so you can jot such items down the moment they are unearthed.
