Writing Your Short Story Steps to follow

Step #1: Choose a point of view First person : involved in the story Third person : detached from the story What are the benefits for each view?

Step #2: Create a conflict What will your main character struggle with? How does this conflict relate to your audience? Is your conflict strong enough to support an entire story?

Step #3: Create a protagonist Who will your main character be? What will they look like? What is his/her name? What is their family like? What does their life look like? How does you character support your story?

Step #4: Create a setting Where will the story take place? At what point in time will your story take place? What is the weather/environment like? Does the setting support and add to the action or conflict?

Step #5: Create the climax What is the turning point for your conflict? What event does your protagonist experience that changes him or her? Is your climax strong enough to catch a readers attention?

Step #6: Think of using literary terms Irony: something unexpected happens Symbolism: an object that represents something else Foreshadowing: something that hints toward future events Do these support and add to your story line?
