Standard #4 - Content Knowledge The teacher candidate understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of the discipline accessible and meaningful for learners to assure mastery of the content. Name of Artifact: Health Lesson Plan Date: 4/10/2016 Course: EDUC 240 Introduction for Health and Physical Education for Teachers Brief Description: This assignment is a lesson plan that is for second grade students. This lesson plan incorporates germ prevention into the traditional classroom atmosphere. This lesson plan informs students on how washing hands, hand sanitizer application, and how covering sneezes correctly can eliminate the spread of germs. Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard 4: Content Knowledge, I have chosen to include my Health Education Lesson Plan. This assignment exhibits my ability to understand central concepts and structures of discipline to create learning experiences that are meaningful for learners to assure mastery of content.

How to Prevent the Spread of Germs This lesson plan is for 2nd grade students Duration: 20 minutes Students will be able to describe methods for preventing the spread of germs through air and touch.

National Health Education Standard Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health. 2.1.3 Describe ways to prevent communicable diseases. Example: Describe methods for preventing the spread of germs through food, water, air, and touch.

Student Objectives Student’s will be able to correctly identify one way to prevent air borne germs from spreading while they are sneezing. Student’s will be able to correctly utilize one way to eliminate germs using water and soap. Student’s will be able to use a third method to kill germs.

Materials Needed 18 Small buckets (one for each student) 18 Small individualized bars of soap 18 Travel size hand sanitizers 3 Roles of paper towels 18 Towels

Preparation The desks will need to be grouped in three groups of six. Each group will need one roll of paper towels Under each student’s work station they will place there towel

Activity The first activity will be about how to wash your hands with soap and water correctly. The second activity will be how to cover a sneeze in the best way possible to eliminate the spread of germs. The third activity will be modeling to the students how to use the correct amount of hand sanitizer in the best way possible.

Assessment I will observe each student individually on how well they wash their hands using the soap and water combination. I will observe every student’s ability to cover a hypothetical sneeze with the sleeve of their shirt in the correct manner. I will observe each student in their application of hand sanitizer.

Accommodations (Allergies) If a student has a skin allergy they will be exempt from the lesson. (Hearing Impaired) The lesson plan will be typed out verbatim and presented on the projector for students to visually see what is being spoken. (Visually Impaired) These students will be allowed to move closer or farther away depending on the need to accommodate.

Safety Concerns Eye exposure to soap In gestation of soap or hand sanitizer Slippery floors Potentially hazardous walking conditions

Self-Reflection This lesson plan would be very beneficial for younger children. Instilling in students at a young age the importance of eliminating germs and maintaining a healthy environment will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Students are surrounded with germs, so in order for them to be healthy and stay in school they need to be informed on the best ways to combat illnesses.
