November 11, 2008 Bell Work Take a Microscope Packet. Read Over Learning Goals.

Key Idea: Microscopes are important tools that enhance our ability to study science.

Learning Goals Obj #1: Recall the history of the microscope. Obj #5: Draw plate circles of specimen. Obj # 2: Justify the importance of the light microscope. Obj #6: Create wet mounts and dry mounts for viewing under microscope at different powers of magnification. Obj #3: Label and describe the function of each part of the light microscope. Obj # 4: Calculate total magnification using the formula. Obj # 7: Examine prepared slides on low and high power.

How will you to learn and do all this?! Model Power Point Demonstration Practice Together Lab Stations: History Meets Science Pond Water Critters Select-a-Slide Scope Basics Solve the Mystery Practice on Your Own Study Guide

How Will You Show Me You Learned? Microscope Quiz (30) Tuesday Nov. 18, 2008 Microscope Lab (50) Wednesday Nov. 19, 2008

What are you going to learn today? Obj # 2: Justify the importance of the light microscope. Obj #3: Label and describe the function of each part of the light microscope. Obj # 4: Calculate total magnification using the formula. Obj #5: Draw plate circles of specimen.

Obj # 2: Justify the importance of the light microscope. What is a light microscope? Why is the invention of the microscope important to science? What is one of the main advantages for using a light microscope?

Obj #3: Label and describe the function of each part of the light microscope. Eyepiece Body tube Revolving Nosepiece Arm Coarse Adjustment Knob Objective Lens Stage Clips Fine Adjustment Knob Stage Lamp Switch Diaphragm Base

Obj # 4: Calculate total magnification using the formula. Total Magnification = Eyepiece x Objective Lens (Eyepiece: 10x) Low Power Lens: (10x) High Power Lens: (43x)

Obj # 4: Calculate total magnification using the formula. Total Magnification = Eyepiece x Objective Lens I have a microscope at home that has an eyepiece that magnifies an object 10x it’s normal size. The objective lens that I am using magnifies the object 80x it’s normal size. What is the total magnification of this microscope? (10x) x (80x) = 800x

HOW TO HANDLE A MICROSCOPE?! arm base
