European World Exploration The Northwest passage, Imperialism Native interactions

The New World New World = N and S America Spain And Portugal start exploring the New World first and find wealth in South America Other European counties want wealth/ power /empire England and France come to North America

The World

The North West Passage Europeans want to get to Asia (China and India) for new goods – silk, spices, etc. Look for passage through North America to get to Asia (NW passage) Really doesn’t exist (no river, arctic is frozen) Will lead to exploration and settlement in Canada

Northwest passage

Key terms Colonization: see wealth in N. America, so set up settlements to facilitate trade (and claim land) Mercantilism: Nations measure power by wealth (so set up colonies to get resources, and create trade markets) Imperialism: policy of extending rule or authority over other countries of territories

Brain Check! Why did Europeans explore? (what are they looking for) What is the North West Passage? What is Mercantilism? What is Imperialism? What do you think will happen when they meet the Natives in Canada?

Rewind: First Europeans to the New World Who explored the new world first? Irish Monk named Brendan claimed to travel across the ocean Vikings: explored Newfoundland and briefly settled there Left when natives are hostile

Lets watch the Video on John Cabot, and take our own notes (cornell style) in our coilbooks!

John Cabot Who is John Cabot and what is his mission? 1497: England sends John Cabot to explore North Atlantic – aiming for Asia Boat “the Mathew” Letter’s Patent: England gives him the right to seek out, discover and find land of the heathens (non-Christians) and to subdue them and take towns (etc) that are found

John Cabot What does he claim for England? Instead of Asia, he finds “new found land” and claims it for England (despite native living there) Finds “Grand Banks” - lots of Cod fish, and claims for England Fisherman start to come here

Imperialism What did John Cabot do that is an example of Imperialism? How was he a part of Mercantilism?
