Fractions Forms & Conversions
What are Fractions? All fractions are rational numbers. There are three different types of fractions: Proper: 3 5 Improper: 14 3 Mixed: 4 2 3 When using fractions in problems, it is best to use either proper or improper…try to avoid mixed numbers whenever possible.
Conversions To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction: 4 2 3 = 14 3 3x4 (multiply denominator and whole number). 12+2 (add total to numerator). 14 3 (denominator stays the same). To convert an improper fraction into a mixed number: 14 3 = 4 2 3 14÷3 (divide numerator by denominator) 4 r2 (answer becomes whole number; remainder becomes numerator) 4 2 3 (denominator stays the same)
Fractions to Decimals For those who prefer decimals, you can convert any fraction into a decimal by dividing (doesn’t matter if it is proper, improper, or mixed). For example… 2 5 = 0.4 2÷5 = 0.4 14 5 = 2.8 14÷5 = 2.8 3 4 5 = 3.8 4÷5 = 0.8; 3 is the whole number.
Decimals to Fractions To convert your decimal back into a fraction, identify how many decimal places you have and put the number over the amount of decimal places. For example… 0.4 = 2 5 4 is in the tenths place; 4 10 = 2 5 2.8 = 14 5 8 is in the tenths place; 28 10 = 14 5 𝑜𝑟 2 4 5 0.38 = 19 50 38 is in the hundredths place; 38 100 = 19 50 You practice in notes: pg. 83, #s 13-34. If you encounter mixed numbers, turn them also into improper fractions.
