A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Meeting William Shakespeare Lived in London in the 16th Century Wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets His plays were performed in the Globe theatre ‘Coined’ many expressions that we still use today! Have you ever used one of these? I have not slept one wink He’s eaten me out of house and home All’s well that ends well That’s the short and long of it What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine A fool’s paradise All corners of the world All of a sudden As dead as a doornail Good riddance Love is blind “He was not of an age, but for all time.” -Ben Jonson, poet and contemporary of Shakespeare

This play is about… A man with a donkey head.. Love mischief Other worlds This play is about…

Unrequited love – what is it? It’s also about…. Unrequited love – what is it?

This play takes place in the woods outside of Athens- in a place called Fairyland, under the light of the moon

Wait! What’s Midsummer?! Midsummer Eve, the Vigil of St. John the Baptist, June 23, was traditionally a time of magic, when spirits supposedly walked abroad and played their tricks upon mortals. It was a time for certain traditional rites, such as the burning of bonfires, which go back to the fertility celebrations of pre-Christian Britain. By power of certain magical charms, maidens on Midsummer Eve might have dreams of who their true loves were to be.

In the opening scene, Hermia refuses to follow Theseus is the Duke of Athens. In the opening scene, Hermia refuses to follow her father Egeus's instructions for her to marry his chosen man, Demetrius. At that time in Athens, Theseus has passed a law where daughters in Athens must marry the man chosen by their fathers, or else face death. Theseus does not want this young girl to die, and offers her another choice, to become a nun.

But Hermia does not love Demetrius because she loves Lysander. Hermia and Lysander decide to elope by escaping through the forest at night. Hermia tells her friend Helena, but what Hermia doesn’t know is that Helena secretly has a crush on Demetrius

After finding out that Hermia loves Lysander, Helena decides to win back Demetrius by revealing the plan to him. Hermia and Lysander run away into the woods where they can escape the law and get married, and Helena closely follows them
