DIFFUSION & OSMOSIS.
Osmosis Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules over a partially permeable membrane from an area of less osmotic potential to an area of more negative.

Explain how molecules move across a semi-permeable membrane. Topic: Osmosis Explain how molecules move across a semi-permeable membrane.

Key Idea #1 Osmosis is the movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane.

Key Idea #2 Regulating water flow is important factor in maintaining homeostasis. Too much water could cause the cell to grow bigger & burst and not enough would cause the cell to shrink.

Key Idea #3 If two solutions are separated by a selectively permeable membrane that allows only water to diffuse across it, the solutes can not diffuse! Instead, water will diffuse to even out the concentrations.

Key Idea #4 KEY IDEA #4: The tonicity of the solution can affect a cell. The effect is different depending on if the concentration of the solution is isotonic, hypertonic, or hypotonic.

Cell will get bigger and possibly burst Cell will shrivel Water moves in and out equally; cell is in equilibrium Cell will shrivel
