AIM: Why do service centers exist? Do Now:Describe the type of job you’re hoping to start after college.   Question#1: Is it a service? Question #2: Would it be difficult to do well at the job you’ve described above if you lived in a small town?

‘In human organization of space, the greatest physical contrast is that between rural and urban forms. In the most advanced countries, the vast majority of the population lives in dense concentrations over small portions of territory. Such concentrations began in a very early period, when towns arose to perform certain functions: (1) to exercise control, (2) to act as a center for the exchange of goods, and (3) to process materials. The first two constitute, in a broad sense, service of “central place” functions – those provided from a center for a surrounding territory or hinterland…’
