Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas? Columbus “Discovery” of America (1492) Do Now-Give 3 ways that Columbus’ “discovery” will effect both Europe and the New World. Spain controls most of New World ↑ competition/ others started to settle Religious and political wars Treaty of Tordesillas (1493 and 1494) Created by Pope Divided up New World Territory between Spain and Portugal Why they let the Pope make the treaty?????? Shows importance of religion They are both Catholic, so he must be fair,,,,,, Right?

Spanish Colonies in the New World Organizing their colony Mining for gold Set up Encomiendas Columbian Exchange (horses, gunpowder etc.) Brought slaves from Africa.. Why? Used to climate Free Natives were dying from disease Set up Missionaries to convert to Catholicism.. Why?? Assimilate into society Christianity is a “passive” or peaceful religion!! Hell to Pay!!!!! Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas?

England’s Colonial Attempts Late to game,,, so how can they benefit from the New World? they got the leftovers, or stole from Spanish Drake… Pirate or hero??? Drake the Dragon or “Sir” Francis Drake??? $40 million bounty Eventually settled South of Canada (present day US) FYI- hard to imagine b/c we are the AWESOME US, but this was by far the least useful area in the New World– no gold or sugar! Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas?

Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas? French Canada Cartier and Champlain Few settlers came to Canada…. Why??? Damn cold!!! France doing pretty good at that point Resources Fish/Fur/Ice/Lumber Good relationship with Natives…. Why??? Fair traders… even traded one item that no other European country would give to Natives.. Guns!!!!!! Didn’t take their land!! ( no settlers,,, remember!!!) Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas?

Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas? Dutch NY Henry Hudson sailed for Dutch East India Co. New Amsterdam (Present day NYC) Eventually overtaken by England Minuet/Stuyvesant/ Jonas Bronc/ van der Donk Aim: How did Europe divide up the Americas?
