COMPARING CONFLICT Russia China

What are the internal and external sources of conflict for each government? How does government attempt to resolve conflict? How are the conflicts related to social cleavages?

In-Class Project Objective: How do Russia and China compare in the way they handle public policy CONFLICTS? SOFT POWER: describes the ability to attract and co-opt (get groups on your side); use of diplomacy or economic incentives HARD POWER: describes the use of coercion (ex: military) to force groups to do what you want them to do

Directions: 1. Pick up a TOPIC that you will research today with your group. You will become an expert in your assigned area so that you may lead our class discussions on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. 2. In GOOGLE CHROME, go to http://tinyurl.com/conflictproject make a copy of the file, share it with your group and your teacher. Please make sure that “anyone with a link can view” it. Then DIVIDE up the questions and start to research! Finish for HW. Great places to start: New York Times Topics BBC

Project Presentations (Lead the class in discussion of your topic) Tuesday: China Conflicts Wednesday: Russia Conflicts HW tonight – Be ready to present tomorrow!

Project Presentation Notes – R&N #9 For each of 6 topics, take notes in your notebook! What is the conflict? How has the government used “soft” or “hard” power? What is the current status of the conflict? Write down the analogy the group came up with!
