Significant Figures, Accuracy, and Precision Mr. Ramsey

Significant Figures Significant Figures - each of the digits of a number that are used to express it to the required degree of accuracy, starting from the first nonzero digit.

Significant Figure Rules 1. Non-zero digits are always significant. 2. Any zeros between two significant digits are significant. 3. A final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal portion ONLY are significant.

Significant Figures Practice 1.247 4.056 0.002 0.0450

Significant Figure Rules For any operation…you always follow the amount of significant figures for the value that is the least accurate (less numbers to the right of the decimal point) Ex: 34.5 is less accurate than 2.76 34.5 + 2.76 = 37.3

Significant Figures 4.678 + 1234.1 45.3 + 2.5678 872.43 – 89.8 Practice 4.678 + 1234.1 45.3 + 2.5678 872.43 – 89.8

Accuracy and Precision Definition Accuracy – How close a measured value is to the actual true value Precision – How close the measured values are to each other

Exit Ticket 2 kg = _________ mg 123.456 + 78.90 How many sig figs? 45.609 How many sig figs? 0.00024 What is the difference between precision and accuracy? When finished please turn your sheet into the tray.
