VOLCANIC LANDFORMS

LAND FORMS FROM LAVA AND ASH SHIELD VOLCANOES COMPOSITE VOLCANOES CINDER CONE VOLCANOES LAVA PLATEAUS

THIN LAYERS OF LAVA POUR OUT OF A VENT AND HAR SHIELD VOLCANO AT SOME PLACES ON THE EARTH LAVA GENTLY FLOWS OUT OF A VENT AND COOLS. MORE LAVA FLOWS OUT AND COOLS IT EVENTUALLY FORMS A WIDE GENTLY FLOWING MOUNTAIN THAT LOOKS LIKE AN ANCIENT SHIELD.

CINDER CONE VOLCANO IF THE LAVA FROM A VOLCANO IS THICK AND STIFF THEN THESE MATERIALS MAY BUILD UP AROUND THE VENT IN A STEEP CONE SHAPED PILE

COMPOSITE VOLCANO SOMETIMES AN ERUPTION WILL PRODUCE ALTERNATING ERUPTIONS OF CINDER , ASH AND BOMBS. THIS PRODUCES A VOLCANO WITH ALTERNATING LAYERS OF LAVA AND ASH.

LAVA PLATEAU RUNNY LAVA CAN FLOW OUT OF MANY CRACKS IN AN AREA . THIS LAVA FLOWS OVER A LARGE AREA BEFORE COOLING. AFTER MILLIONS OF YEARS OF DOING THIS A GIANT PLATEAU MADE OUT OF COOLED, HARD LAVA FORMS

CALDERA SOMETIMES WHEN A VOLCANO ERUPTS ALL THE MAGMA COMES OUT FROM THE MAGMA CHAMBER . WITH NOTHING TO SUPPORT IT THE TOP FALLS IN. SOMETIMES THE SIDES AND WATER ARE ALL THAT ARE INSIDE

SOILS FROM LAVA AND ASH WHEN LAVA FIRST COMES OUT THERE IS NOTHING LIVING IN IT. OVER TIME THE HARD COOLED LLAVA BREAKS DOWN. THIS RELEASES MANY NUTRIENTS THAT PLANTS NEED. WE CALL SOIL THAT IS RICH IN PLANT NUTRIENTS RICH SOIL THAT CAN PRODUCE MANY AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS. THIS IS WHY MANY PEOPLE LIVE NEAR VOLCANOES THAT HAVE ERUPTED IN THE PAST- AND MAY ERUPT AGAIN

LANDFORMS FROM MAGMA VOLCANIC NECKS DIKES SILLS BATHOLITHS DOME MOUNTAINS

VOLCANIC NECK WHEN MAGMA HARDENS IN A VOLCANOS PIPE AND THE SOFTER ROCK AROUND IT WEARS AWAY THE MAGMA LOOKS LIKE A GIANT TOOTH STUCK IN THE GROUND

DIKES AND SILLS DIKES – WHEN MAGMA FORCES ITSELF DOWN BETWEEN LAYERS OF ROCK AND HARDENS SILLS – WHEN MAGMA FORCES ITS WAY BETWEEN LAYERS OF ROCK AND HARDENS

BATHOLITHS A BATHOLITH FORMS WHEN A LARGE MASS OF MAGMA COOLS INSIDE THE CRUST. THESE FORM THE CORE OF MANY MOUNTAIN RANGES

DOME MOUNTAIN SMALLER BODIES OF MAGMA ARE BLOCKED BY HORIZONTAL ROCK LAYERS. THE HEAT AND PRESSURE FROM THE MAGMA BEND AND PUSH THE ROCK LAYERS UP. EVENTUALLY THE ROCK WEARS AWAY LEAVING THE HARDENED MAGMA EXPOSED.

SECTION REVIEW DESCRIBE 5 LANDFORMS FORMED FROM LAVA AND ASH. A. SHIELD MOUNTAIN B. CINDER CONE C. COMPOSITE D. LAVA PLATEAU E. CALDERA

2. DESCRIBE HOW A LAVA PLATEAU FORMS. 3. WHAT FEATURES FORM AS A RESULT OF MAGMA HARDENING BENEATH EARTHS SURFACES. A.VOLCANIC NECK B. DIKE C. SILL D. BATHOLITH E. DOME MOUNTAIN

4. DESCRIBE HOW A DOME MOUNTAIN CAN EVENTUALLY FORM OUT OF MAGMA THAT HARDENED BENEATH EARTH’S SURFACE. 5. EXPLAIN THE FORMATION OF A VOLCANIC LANDFORM THAT CAN RESULT WHEN A VOLCANO USES UP ALL THE MAGMA IN IT’S MAGMA CHAMBER. A. CALDERA
