Balancing Redox Reactions with Oxidation Numbers (see p 462) 1.Assign oxidation number 2.Identify oxidation and reduction 3.Determine the # of e- lost.
Electrochemistry Use of spontaneous chemical reactions to produce electricity; use of electricity to drive non-spontaneous reactions. Zn(s) + Cu 2+ (aq)
Aim: How to write half reactions
1/2 reactions AP style. What are 1/2 reactions Reactions in aqueous solutions can be complicated and hard to balance. Our solution… break the one reaction.
Pg Balancing Redox Reaction  Can use “old” way: Ag (s) + Fe(NO3)3 (aq)  Fe (s) + AgNO3 (aq)  But what if we have a reaction that looks like.
Half-reactions show the oxidation or reduction reaction separated. Cu (s) + 2 AgNO 3(aq) → Cu(NO 3 ) 2(aq) + 2 Ag (s) Oxidation:Cu → Cu e – Reduction:Ag.
OXIDATION REDUCTION REACTIONS. Rules for Assigning Oxidation States The oxidation number corresponds to the number of electrons, e -, that an atom loses,
Ammonium Dichromate Volcano! 1)When heated, ammonium dichromate decomposes to produce a chromium oxide compound, a gas, and water vapor. Write and balance.
Redox Reactions.
Balancing Redox Equations. Electron Transfer Method (Change in Oxidation Number Method) works best for formula equations (no ions present) Steps: 1.Write.
Electrochemistry AP Chemistry. During oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions, the oxidation states of two substances change. oxidation = reduction = loss.
Balancing Redox Reactions Chem 12. Application of oxidation numbers: Oxidation = an increase in oxidation number Reduction = a decrease in oxidation number.
Redox Reactions. REDOX-OXIDATION STATES Day One.
Balancing Redox Equations Identifying if a redox reaction has occurred – In order for a reaction to be classified as a redox reaction there must be a change.
REDOX REACTIONS. OXIDATION NUMBER  The oxidation state of an element in an elemental state is zero. (O 2, Fe, He)  The oxidation state of an element.
Warmup 2. Balance this redox reaction in acid: + Fe 2+ + Cr 2 O 7 2-  Fe 3+ + Cr 3+ Ni e¯  Ni E° = V Zn e¯  Zn E° = V 1. Write.

Daniel L. Reger Scott R. Goode David W. Ball Lecture 03B (Chapter 18, sections 18.1, 18.2) Balancing Redox Reactions.
Oxidation is an increase in oxidation number Reduction is a decrease in oxidation number H 2 + Cl 2 → 2 H Cl Notice: H 2 went from 0 to +1 (
Steps in Balancing Redox 1.Determine the oxidation number of all elements in the compounds 2. Identify which species have undergone oxidation and reduction.
Balancing Oxidation Reduction Equations
Redox Reactions in Solution. Predicting Redox Rxns (The normal way) 1.Identify all the entities present in the solution 2.Decide which are oxidizing agents.
Guidelines 1)Write down overall equation. 2)Determine oxidation and reduction half-reactions. 3)Balance the atoms.  Add H 2 O to balance oxygens.  Add.

Day 2: Balancing Redox Reactions in Acidic or Basic solutions

Review Redox Balancing: Steps: Write half rxn’s Balance atoms Balance electrons Add the half rxn’s Review Redox Balancing: Balance the following chemical equation using the half reaction method Easy: __Fe(s) + __Ag+  __Fe+3 + __Ag(s) Hard: __NH3 + __O2  __NO + __H2O

Balancing Redox Rxns in Acid/Alkaline Solution Some redox rxns occur in solutions that are acidic or basic, so H2O, H+ , and OH- are also involved in the reactions For acid soln Steps: Write half rxn’s Balance atoms Balance electrons Add the half rxn’s 2a. Add H2O to balance the O’s 2b. Add H+ to balance the H’s 2c. Add OH- to both sides of the rxn for each H used For base soln

Example: The following reaction takes place in an acidic solution. Balance it. VO2+1 (aq) + Zn(s)  VO2+ (aq) + Zn2+ (aq)

Example: The following reaction takes place in a basic solution. Balance it. Al(s) + S(s)  Al(OH)3(s) + HS- (aq)

Steps: Write half rxn’s Balance atoms Balance electrons Add the half rxn’s
