Identify and Investigate the role of enzymes.
Enzymes Mrs. Harlin Explain how enzymes act as catalysts for biological reactions.
Enzymes Lab 5.
KEY CONCEPT Enzymes are catalysts for chemical reactions in living things Some chemical reactions that make life possible are too slow or have activation.
Catalysts of Life. Review of Chemical Reactions A chemical reaction is a process that changes, or transforms, one set of chemicals into another Reactants.
Homeostasis of Enzymes What is an enzyme? How do enzymes work? What factors can effect enzyme action?
Explain how enzymes function as catalysts.
Enzymes.  Proteins play major roles in the cell, but none as important as making up enzymes.  Enzymes permit reactions to occur at rates of thousands.
2.4 Chemical Reactions and Enzymes. 2 Chemical Reactions A process that changes or transforms one set of chemicals into another Mass and energy are conserved.
Lecture 4 Enzymes. Proteins Catalyze all cellular reactions Enzymes are not changed by the reactions, and can be reused.
Enzymes Protein Responsible for most cell functions Functions – to build or break apart – Translate DNA – Breakdown food – Put together macromolecules.
Enzymes.
ENZYMES. There are thousands of reactions that occur within organisms. These reactions would occur very slowly or not at all without enzymes.
Enzymes All chemical reactions convert reactants to products. All chemical reactions convert reactants to products. Ex. 2 HCl + Mg  MgCl 2 + H 2 Ex. 2.
Enzymes.
Enzyme Activity. ______________________ are broken and made between one or more substances to create new substances. In the process energy is absorbed.
Chemical Reactions Make Life Possible! Chemical Reactions Proceed as Follows: ReactantsProducts Energy must be added to “activate” the reaction and break.
Flow of energy through life  Life is built on biochemical reactions.
Chemical reactions CO 2 + H 2 O  H 2 CO 3 Reactants: Molecules going into a reaction Products: Molecules coming out of a reaction.
Enzymes. What is an enzyme? Organic catalyst Protein molecule.
Chemistry of Life Chapter 2. All Living Things Use Energy Energy in living things is converted from 1 form to another (chemical-physical-thermal etc.)
Enzymes: They do all the work! Enzymes  Proteins  Help chemical reactions happen  reduce activation energy  increase rate of reaction.
Chemistry in Biology  The activation energy is the minimum amount of energy needed for reactants to form products in a chemical reaction.  Exothermic.
Enzymes Chemistry of Living Things. What are we learning? Benchmark: I will explain the role of enzymes as catalysts Objectives: SC.912.L – Explain.
Chemical Reaction A process that changes one set of substances into a new set of sub. Chem rxns can occur too slowly and need help. Catalyst –speeds up.

Lesson 5 Enzymes. Catalyst: something that increases the rate of reactions Enzymes are biological catalysts Often ends with –ase Most enzymes are proteins.

Enzymes

Enzymes Enzymes are proteins used by the cell to control the rate of chemical reactions in the body They lower the activation energy (amount of energy needed to start the chemical reaction)of the reaction

Enzymes The substrate binds to the enzyme at the active site (the word “substrate” refers to any molecule) The enzyme is available to be used again

The rate of enzyme activity depends on: pH Temperature Concentration
