Review: Place Value WHOLE NUMBERS hundred thousands ten thousands thousands hundreds tens ones 154,678 place holder 100,000 +50,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 70 + 8 1 hundred thousand 5 ten thousands 4 thousands 6 hundreds 7 tens 8 ones

Why isn’t there a “oneths” place? Place Value DECIMALS hundred thousands ten thousands ones hundreds tens thousands 154,678. 239 place holder tenths decimal point hundredths thousandths Why isn’t there a “oneths” place? 1 hundred thousand 5 ten thousands 4 thousands 6 hundreds 7 tens 8 ones 2 tenths 3 hundredths 9 thousandths 100,000 +50,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 70 + 8 + .2 + .03 + . 009

Tenths… Like the Fraction! .4 “point four” place value: “four tenths” which is the same as the fraction 4 10 So…. = .4

0.9 Another example: “zero point 9” place value: “nine tenths” which is the same as the fraction 9 10 So…. = .9

place value: “three and six tenths” One more: 3.6 “three point six” place value: “three and six tenths” which is the same as the mixed fraction 6 10 So…. = 3.6 3

Hundredths… Like the Fraction! .07 “point zero seven” place value: “seven hundredths” which is the same as the fraction 7 100 So…. = .07

Hundredths… Like the Fraction! .48 “point forty-eight” place value: “forty-eight hundredths” which is the same as the fraction 48 100 So…. = .48

Equivalent Decimals the decimal .1 is the same as .10 .1 is one-tenth, and .10 is ten-hundredths they are equivalent fractions (remember?) =

Let’s talk about “moolah” .1 and .10 represent the same fractional amount of a whole number… think of .10 as the money value of $0.10 or ten cents what fraction of a whole dollar is that? = = = = $0.10 = 1 10

Now let’s try it with the decimal .03  what fraction of a whole dollar is .03 ? .03 and .30 are NOT the same fractional value .03  $0.03 or 3¢ or 3 pennies = .03 = 3 100

Mixed Numbers include a whole number value and a part of a whole 3.8 is a mixed number it represents three wholes and eight tenths of a whole = 3.8 if it were a money value, $3.80, it would represent three dollars and eight dimes = 3.8 = 3 8 10
