Welcome to Indigenous Peoples in a Global Context! Sit somewhere on the inside ‘circle’ where a course outline is!

Minds On – Quick Discuss Do you know any recent Indigenous issues in Canada? What do you know about Indigenous people around the world? Can you name any Indigenous heroes/politicians/celebrities? Why did you take this course?

Intro Activity – Picture Inquiry Simple! Take the picture that was given to your group and: Discuss what you think is happening in the picture and where these people might be from Be prepared to share those ideas with the class

Defining Indigenous The word Indigenous refers to the original inhabitants of the land or their descendants. There are at least 5000 indigenous cultures today, with at least 300 million indigenous peoples

Defining Indigenous Reading You will get 2 definitions of Indigenous. On your own or with a partner read those definitions and answer the questions on the sheet.

Defining Indigenous Questions How would you characterize Definition #1? Provide 1-2 pieces of evidence to support that idea. How would you characterize Definition #2? Provide 1-2 pieces of evidence to support that idea. Which one do you like better and why?

UN Definition of Indigenous Peoples (1993) Indigenous communities, peoples and nations are those which, having a historical continuity with pre-invasion and pre-colonial societies that developed on their territories, consider themselves distinct from other sectors of societies now prevailing in those territories, or parts of them. They form at present non-dominant sectors of society and are determined to preserve, develop and transmit to future generations their ancestral territories, and their ethnic identity, as the basis of their continued existence as peoples, in accordance with their own cultural patterns, social institutions and legal systems.

Indigenous Peoples in Canada In 1982, the Canadian constitution recognized three groups – First Nations, Métis and Inuit – as Aboriginal peoples Each has distinct histories, languages, practices and spiritual beliefs ‘Aboriginal’ is still used as it reflects much of the language used In Canadian legal documents.
