Reported Speech

Noun Clauses - Review noun clauses are S + V word groups that behave like a noun Do you know if he is coming? Do you know that he is sick? Do you know who that man is?

DIRECT QUOTES

What is a direct quote? A direct quote includes: A speaker Punctuation Tell/say He said, “Go now, please.” He told me, “I have three ears.”

FORM: The order can come 3 ways: S + said, “Speech.” “Speech,” S + said. “Speech,” S + said, “Speech.” John said, “Leave now.” “Leave now,” John said. “Leave now,” John said, “or I will punch you.” “Go away!” John said. “I don’t want to see you.” If you are interrupting a sentence, use “,”. If a sentence finishes, use “.”

REPORTED SPEECH Your enemy. This is super hard. Also known as INDIRECT SPEECH.

REPORTED SPEECH When we say what someone said, we change the time of tenses. We change the quote to a noun clause with that. Jack: “I like eating.” Jack told me that he liked eating. Jack: “I stole your phone.” Jack told me that he had stolen my phone.

REPORTED SPEECH You must change the tense from the direct (quoted) speech to indirect (reported) speech. You will be working on this today.
