Ser [parte 2]

Ser: to be Ser Singular Plural Yo soy 1 Nosotros/as somos Tú eres Vosotros/as sois 2 Usted es Ustedes son Él es Ella es Ellos son Ellas son 3

Uses of SER

Use ser to identify people or things. Note: Spanish doesn’t have a translation for “it” or “they” when talking about things as a subject. Typically this just gets left out of the sentence and they start with the verb. Ejemplos: ¿Quién es él? Él es Mario. ¿Qué es? Es un libro.

De la tarea: 4. They are friends. (amigos) 3. It is a pencil. Es un lápiz. 4. They are friends. (amigos) Ellos son amigos.

She is María. It is a map. They are some pens. Práctica: Ella es María. It is a map. Es un mapa. They are some pens. Son unos bolígrafos.

Ser also expresses possession with the pronoun “de.” NOTE: There is no Spanish version of [noun]’s (like “Daniel’s book”). Instead, Spanish uses [noun] de [owner] libro de Daniel

Ejemplos: It is María’s suitcase. They are the girl’s notebooks. Es la maleta de María. They are the girl’s notebooks. Son los cuadernos de la chica.

NOTE: When “de” is followed by “el” the two form the contraction “del.” (like can not becomes “can’t”). “De” doesn’t contract/combine with “la”, “los,” or “las.”

Ejemplos: It is the boy’s problem. It is the tourist’s photo. Es el problema de el chico.  Es el problema del chico. It is the tourist’s photo. Es la foto de el turista.  Es la foto del turista.

Práctica: They are María’s books. It is Marco and Jorge’s school. Son los libros de María. It is Marco and Jorge’s school. Es la escuela de Marco y Jorge. The map is Bob’s. El mapa es de Bob.
