An introductory series of appositives The art of styling sentences: Pattern 6

Word of the day: Appositive What is an appositive? Huck’s friend Tom gets all his ideas from reading. Appositive Noun An appositive is an alternative word for something else that is also mentioned in the same sentence. It is kind of like repeating yourself, but using a different word to do so.

What does this sentence mean? an introductory series of appositives (parallel in structure and related in meaning) with a dash and a summarizing subject Series We covered this in patterns 4 and 5 Appositives Alternatives to a noun Dash The “-” thing Summarizing subject This is the noun that the appositives have “reworded” It is what links all of the appositives in the sequence Without this, the series wouldn’t really be appositives

What does this look like? Maths, Science, Geography – classes that made life hell. Summary word Appositives Notice that “classes” is a summary of the three different appositives “Maths” “Science” and “English” are all different ways of stating which class; this makes them appositives

Now try writing three of your own Pattern 6 examples Istanbul, Budapest, Bucharest – best holiday ever! Ant Man, Iron Man 3, Green Lantern – Marvel movies that should not have been made Maltesers, Pods, Vanilla Coke – food that makes studying bearable Now try writing three of your own
