Thoroughbred By: Angel Kleiman 4-23-15

History The breed wasn't created until around the 18th century when the three foundation sires were imported to England. Arabians, Turks, and Barbs were bred with larger English mares to create the thoroughbred. They were developed for racing and jumping. Between 1730-1775 186 thoroughbreds were brought to the U.S. Today the breed can be found all over the world, and are also a light horse breed.

Physical Description Bred for stamina, athleticism, and speed. The can be 15 to over 17 hands tall. They have well chiseled heads, with widely spaced intelligent eyes, high withers, deep chests, evenly curved back, lean muscular body, and long clean legs. The most common colors are bay, brown or dark bay, chestnut, black, and grey. Less common colors are roan, palomino, and very rarely white. They can have all kinds of markings, but usually never have body markings like a paint.

Pros and Cons PROS: Great speed, light bulky, muscular, dense bones, popular in many countries, perfect for racing, consistent, high endurance, long life time. CONS: Can have explosive nature, excessive vigor.

Miscellaneous Facts Their stride length at top speed can be over 20 feet Can run up to 40 miles per hour Can jump the highest Birthdays are recorded on January first (only in northern hemisphere) Most breeders for racing try and have the foals due close to January first to give the foals more time to grow. Have contributed to many types of breeds of horses Generally stallions run faster then mares Some famous thoroughbreds are Seattle Slew, Seabiscuit, Secretariat, Man O War, Zenyatta, and California Chrome

Facts continued Racehorses usually are shod by a farrier for racing. All horses that are raced if the are a male usually are not geldings, because if the prove to be good racehorse they will be bred. From racing many injuries can occur causing unsoundness. Thoroughbreds are not a color breed.
