Descriptive Essay

Definition Descriptive essay a form of academic writing that is built around a detailed description of a person, building, place, situation, etc..

Main Purpose of Descriptive Essay is to describe something in a vivid and particular manner, so that the reader can easily picture the described object, person or state, in their mind

Steps for Writing 1.) Choose a subject on which you want to write and decide what, or who, you will describe. 2) Do an outline or a sketch, listing the facts, characteristics and peculiarities you will develop throughout your essay.

Steps for Writing Continued 3.) Gather information or facts for intro paragraph. 4.) Decide the main idea for each of your paragraphs 5) Write each paragraph starting with a topic sentence. 6.)Write a conclusion that discusses the importance of your subject

Key Points to Consider Needs to have a well balanced structure. Introduction Paragraph You should start with the introduction of the thing or person place being described. Specify your relation to the person, the location of the place, the purpose of the object etc.

Key Points to Consider Main Body Focus on specific qualities For example if you choose to write about a person you will include a paragraph about: Appearance Personality Hobbies Talents

Key Points to Consider Conclusion Should focus on personal feelings about the chosen subject explaining why it had such an influence on you.

Do’s and Don’t’s Do use a variety of connective words Do use comparisons For example when describing an object, say what its shape reminds you of; when talking about a person compare their traits with that of an animal. Use emotion do not be afraid to give your opinion

DO NOT Don’t begin all of your sentences in a similar way it will make your essay sound boring. Don’t switch from present to past tense. Don’t write general statements. If you cannot keep your reader engaged they will not care about your essay Don’t get off topic or over describe
