FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE IN LOVING MEMORY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY REMEMBERANCE OF EXCUSES… WE SAID GOODBYE, NOW WE REMEMBER YOU OH BELOVED EXCUSES FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE

Session: Helping to Create the Environment

Q of the Day: Do I know what is expected of me during class? Work for the day: Rules & Procedures Creating Norms Thinking Logs Signing the Pledge

Rules and Procedures Warm up Why do we have rules in our society? Take 2 mins to write your response Talk to your Star Wars Partner to you to check in Empire you speak first for 45 seconds Jedis you listen Jedis- You will be summarizing what your Empire partner said Bringing this out to the floor… How are rules and procedures different?

Rules… Turn off and/or silence ALL electronic devices before entering class Put away ALL electronic devices unless otherwise instructed Bring ALL materials needed for class Follow procedures practiced throughout year

Consequences… Verbal warnings Phone call Referral Teacher/Student Conference Parent/Teacher/Student Conference Administration/Parent/Student Conference

Procedures- Entering/Leaving Have a seat, take out materials, and ready for Preamble Dismissal will be by Mr. Morgana (Not your phone, the clock, or the bell) Push in your chairs all the way to table Period 7- You put chairs up after PWR Reading Questions?

Procedures - Bathroom MUST use planner During instruction (me talking to you) is not the best time to go During Thinking Logs time also NO BUENO During Breaks TWO at a time 10/10 Rule No leaving 1st or Last 10 mins of class Ask for permission at Best times (get better at “feeling” when it could be ok to go”

Procedures – Absent Work Recommended to see me during Office Hours Wednesdays– 2:45-4:45 OR by APPT You have 7 days from date of absence to turn in work You MUST communicate with Mr. Morgana within those 7 days Questions?

Procedures- Academic Help Come to Office Hours Email specific questions Example: Hello Mr. Morgana, I have a question about what exactly we are supposed to turn in on Friday? Can you give me a response whenever is convenient? Thank you Paul

Procedures- Academic Help-Contd Non Example for Email: Hey, what’s the homework? Follow Up with Mr. Morgana if needed

Norms & Expectations Do you know what is meant by a norm? Can you think of examples? Let’s look at examples from Animo Leadership Another example of what ours could look like:

Norms & Expectations…Contd Now, let’s make some of our own Get in groups of 3-4 Discuss what are some expectations you’d like to set for the work we’re doing this year We’ll be making a poster at the end to have Really think about what kind of environment is going to work the BEST for your brains… Let’s put these on paper now so we can know exactly what’s expected of us as we work… Any edits, adjustments, before we seal the deal?

Thinking Logs Before we can move forward with the skills we need to develop, there needs to be a way to keep track of HOW we’re thinking & more importantly HOW we’re thinking Since a large component of the class revolves around READING, WRITING, SPEAKING, & VOCABULARY… Our Starting point is that…let me show what I mean

Practicing Using Thinking Logs… Using your thinking log… let’s watch a video of

From Log to Blog… So now that you know how you’ll be keeping track of your thinking… A Large component (part) of this course is TALKING What’s the main difference between other mammals, insects, and animals and humans? Once you’ve thought in your logs… Then you’ll BLOG online to continue the dialogue we’ve had in class… an example… Sample Blog

Questions about the Thinking Logs & Blogs? Now, to recap, summarize, and next steps… We all know the mechanics of the class? (Rules, procedures, & consequences) We’ve created the expectations we will all follow all year long? We now are ready to start our work… FIRST DAY OF CLASS MONDAY 8/25

THE PLEDGE! Please read the document in front of you titled “Pledge of Understanding” Now that you’ve acknowledged understanding… You may now SIGN THE PLEDGE!
