“All on the Map”

commotion A commotion happens when a lot of people are running around making a lot of noise.

The laughter of the townspeople caused a lot of commotion. Which wouldn’t cause a commotion- banging pot and pans together or waving to a friend? Explain.

commotion Would a playground be a place where there might be a commotion? Why or why not? What kind of weather might cause a commotion and wake you up at night? Name some places where you would NOT expect a commotion.

muffle When you muffle a sound, you cover it up so it is not so loud.

muffle The woman was able to muffle her laughter by stuffing her scarf in her mouth. Which sound would you try to muffle- beautiful music or a noisy lawn mower? Explain.

muffle Imagine that your are trying to sleep, but you can hear the sound of a television in the other room. How could you muffle the sound? Name a place where you might need to muffle your voice. How could you muffle the sound? Think of a loud sound you would like to muffle. Demonstrate what that noise would sound like when it was muffled.

overflowing If something is overflowing, it is pouring out of its usual space.

The courtroom was overflowing with crowds of people. What might cause a pond to overflow- too much sun or too much rain? Explain.

overflowing What could you do if your toy box started overflowing with toys? Name places where you might see water overflowing. Imagine that you helped your sister clean her room. Her words are overflowing with praise. What does that mean?

locate If you try to locate something, you try to find it.

locate You can look on a map to locate a building. Which would be easier to locate, a lost bike or a lost marble? Why?

locate Name places you would like to locate on a globe. Why would you like to find out where these places are? Locate something in the classroom that is round. Give directions that tell how classmates can locate it.

search When you search for something, you look for it.

A map can help you search for a street. Where would be a place to search for a book- a movie theater or a library?

search Pretend you are searching for a hidden treasure. Where are you and what are you looking for? What kind of store would you visit to search for your favorite game? How can you use a computer to search for information?

symbol You can use a mark or a picture called a symbol to stand for a word or an object.

A flag symbol is next to the post office on the map. What would make a better map symbol for a park- some trees or some cars?

Name a symbol you see at school. What does it stand for? Make up a symbol that stands for you. Describe what it would look like and explain why?
