Open vs. Closed Systems

What is a System? An organized group of related objects that interact to create a whole. List some examples of systems

COMPONENTS OF A SYSTEM Matter and Energy move through systems. Matter has mass and takes up space Examples:

COMPONENTS OF A SYSTEM Energy is the ability to cause change Examples:

TYPES OF SYSTEMS OPEN SYSTEMS Matter and energy both move in and out of the system. Example: A lake, an air conditioner

CLOSED SYSTEMS Energy moves in and out of the system, but matter does not. Example: Terrarium, television

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Is Earth an open or closed system? Explain your answer.

Boiling Pot Example Open System Closed System

Other Examples: Classroom – open or closed? Refrigerator – open or closed? Television – open or closed?
