Plot

Plot = a series of events. One event triggers another. (Think of movies you know) Most plots follow a basic 4-part structure.

1. Exposition Part of the story in which the basic situation is outlined and the characters and main conflict are introduced.

2. Rising Action Chain of events that takes place as the main character struggles to achieve his/her goal.

3. Climax The point of highest emotional intensity; sometimes the point at which we learn the outcome of the conflict.

4. Resolution Events following the climax in which any remaining issues are resolved.

Cinderella Example Exposition eg. We are introduced to Cinderella and some details about her terrible life. Rising Action eg. Cinderella meets her Fairy Godmother, goes to the ball and meets the prince. Climax eg. The prince tries the shoe on Cinderella’s foot and realises that she is his one true love. Resolution eg. They get married and live happily ever after.

Conflict The struggle or clash between opposing characters, forces or emotions. There are 2 main types of conflict; Internal Conflict: An emotional struggle in a character’s own heart or mind. External Conflict: A person, force of thing prevents the main character from reaching his/her goal.
