The Excretory System. The excretory system The excretory system includes the skin, lungs and kidneys which all release metabolic wastes from the body.
Excretion vs. Elimination. Your body makes several kinds of waste, which fall into two groups: –Undigested solid wastes –Wastes made by cells.

The Excretory System

Review Chemical reactions take place within the body known as metabolic reactions. Metabolic reactions produce wastes The excretory system in the human body is responsible for eliminating the metabolic waste urea from the body Excretion and egestion are different process in the human body.

Label The Excretory System

The Kidneys Has 3 main parts: The cortex Medulla Pelvis

Label the Kidney

Functions of the Kidney The kidney filters waste products from the blood and passes this out of the body It also controls the amount of water and salts in the body

Objective: To describe the composition of urine

Urine Composition Urine is made up of: Water (largest component) Urea Mineral Salts (mainly sodium chloride) Other waste products

Kidney Stones One common and painful kidney disorder is kidney stones, which are small crystals (made up of substances such as calcium) formed in the kidney It is mainly caused by not drinking enough water.

Dialysis Objective: To describe dialysis

The Liver Objective: To describe the function of the liver Large, red/ brown organ Below the diaphragm Largest organs in the body (over 1kg)

Functions of the Liver Produces bile which helps to: digest fat Excretes bile pigments (produced from hemoglobin breakdown) 2. Detoxifies harmful substances such as alcohol and drugs by chemically altering them
