Pre-write Setting and theme: Objective: to develop a theme, supporting evidence, and topic sentence.

Pre-write In your writer’s notebook, identify two scenes from your independent text that you really enjoyed and explain why in a few sentences. I really enjoyed the scene where Han reacts to his sister’s illness and attempts to strategize ways to help his sister and ensure that she recovers. He immediately acts on his desire to take care of sister and I find that trait endearing, since he feels a sense of responsibility for his family. I also enjoyed the scene where Han negotiated with the merchant since it illustrates his resourcefulness and experience in dealing with situations that do not have easy solutions.

Supporting evidence Review as a class what makes for good supporting evidence (how to select). Look at the painting and identify evidence that supports my conclusion that the painting is haunting in nature.

Qualities of relevant supporting evidence Make a list of the qualities and add them to your writer’s notebook. Qualities of relevant supporting evidence

Supporting evidence Select two pieces of evidence from your independent text from those two scenes that you enjoyed.

Identify what those two scenes have in common (what is the thread that connects them). Common thread

Develop a theme around those two pieces of evidence.

Identify what those two scenes have in common concerning setting (physical, social, or power/authority). Literary element

Start a draft by writing out your topic sentence.
