Elements of Vocabulary Lesson 1 Vocabulary Triumph: a great success or achievement Ex. Finding the cure for cancer would be a great triumph. Divine: wonderful; seems to come from out of this world Ex. The fourth of July fireworks were divine and colorful. Vanish: when someone or something disappears suddenly in a way that cannot be explained Ex. The car keys mysteriously vanished from the kitchen counter. Stupefy: when something surprises you so much that it’s hard to think Ex. If I saw superman fly overhead it would stupefy me. Crave: when you want something so much you can hardly think of anything else Ex. There are times I crave chocolate so badly I have to stop what I am doing and eat a piece. Dejected: you feel sad because you have been disappointed by something or someone Ex. I felt dejected when I struck out in my baseball game. Fulfill: when a wish or dream comes true or your needs have been met Ex. Josh will fulfill his dream of becoming a singer by winning American Idol. Dazzle: bright or so beautiful that it makes it hard to see Ex. The dazzling light shining off the crown of jewels caused me to cover my eyes.   Confound: to confuse or mix someone up Ex. The map confounded me until I realized I was holding it upside down! Misconstrue: to get the wrong idea about something Ex. Don’t misconstrue my directions, you are to complete all homework the night it is assigned – not by the end of the week! Oblivious: not aware of what is happening Ex. She was oblivious to the weather conditions and left her much needed umbrella at home. Canny: clever or smart Ex. As the little pigs sat in their brick house, the oldest pig remarked, “you do not have to be canny to outwit the wolf!” Overt: something open to view, not a secret Ex. When the speeding driver gave the cop a dollar bill he asked if it was an overt attempt to bribe him. Covert: secretive Ex. The spies completed a covert operation and captured the princess.
