Presentation transcript:

Matter Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

Elements An Element is one or more atoms of just one type.

Compounds A compound is a group of two or more elements bonded together. Elements gain new properties when they bond to form compounds. Compounds can only be separated chemically. A reaction must occur and energy must be involved to separate the elements in a compound.

Mixtures A mixture is two or more items placed together. The parts of a mixture retain their own properties. Mixtures can be separated by physical means.

Types of mixtures Heterogeneous Mixtures: the different parts in the mixture can easily be seen. Homogenous Mixtures: the different parts in the mixture can’t be seen. Solution: a mixture that is dissolved in a liquid.
