Presentation transcript:

Bell Ringer: Thursday, December 8th Correct these two sentences: THEN… You have finished Outliers! Now that you’ve finally figured out (at least part of) Gladwell’s road to success, what about your own? What opportunities have you, your parents, or your grandparents (etc.) received to land you where you are today? If you can’t think of anything, perhaps think about what possible opportunities you have growing up here in Grosse Pointe and how you can take advantage of them.

Question… On page 272, Gladwell states: “That is the story of my mother’s path to success – and it isn’t true….It leaves out my mother’s many opportunities and the importance of her cultural legacy.” Name and explain at least 2 of the opportunities that Gladwell’s mother had in her path to success. Number your responses.

With your group… Discuss how the following elements played into Gladwell’s mother’s success…and ultimately his own. His grandmother’s personality (section 2, p. 272) The riots of 1937 (section 2, p. 272) Mr. Chance (section 2, p. 275) Skin color (sections 3 and 4)

Read and Discuss… Last 2 paragraphs of the book…open to page 284 “…if the resources of that grocer, the fruits of those riots, the possibilities of that culture, and the privileges of that skin tone had been extended to others, how many more would now live a life of fulfillment, in a beautiful house high on a hill?”
