Struggling to Get By 1933- ¼ of the work force was unemployed The jobless went hungry Soup kitchens, bread lines People who couldn’t pay mortgages were evicted Forcably removed from homes Americans began to build shantytowns (towns full of shacks) on unused or public lands called Hoovervilles The homeless hitchhiked to seek employment Hoboes began “riding the rails,” traveling cross country by rail road cars Immigrants returned to their native countries Fed Govn’t set up reparation drives to send poor immigrants back to their home countries

The Dust Bowl Crop prices dropped so farmer planted more wheat Drought struck the Great Plains- no crops Winds blew the dust for hundreds of miles Dust buried crops and livestock Dust filled the lungs of people and animals, killing them During the 1930s on average 50 dust storms hit a year Mortgaged homes were foreclosed and turned over to the bank, many farmers in Oklahoma became known as “Okies” moved west to CA to seek a better life
