Opposites Opposites are two numbers located the same distance from zero on the number line in opposite directions. The opposite of a number is also called its additive inverse.

Absolute Value The absolute value of a number x is its distance from zero on the number line. It is indicated by the symbol |x| and is read “the absolute value of x.”
