Presentation transcript:

Point of view First person --> narrator uses words like me, I us Second person --> narrator uses words like you Third person --> narrator uses words like He, She, They (they aren't a character in the book)

Examples of Point of view The narrator uses third person point of view to establish a setting where the book will begin and end. Because he uses the third person point of view, he can give a deeper understanding of the setting and character’s emotions that the characters in the story might not understand “Lennie removed his hat dutifully and laid it on the ground in front of him. The shadow in the valley was bluer and the evening came fast. On the wind the sound of crashing in the brush came to them” (Steinbeck 105).

irony Situational irony --> something other than what is expected happens DRamatic irony --> audience knows something that the characters do not Verbal irony --> characters say something that does not carry its literal meaning

Examples of irony Situational irony = George kills Lennie in order to save him from Curley and the others (page 106) Crooks is one of the better off characters in the story, but his social status is lower (page 66-67) Dramatic irony = Lennie talks about how he is excited to start the ranch with George but we know that Lennie is about to die (page 105) Curley's wife allows Lennie to stroke her hair but we know what happened at Weed will probably happen again and he won't let go (page 90) Verbal irony = Steinbeck describes Lennie similarly to an animal but he has human-like emotions like hopes and dreams (thinking to the future) (page 105) Curley and Carlson wonder what's eating at George and Slim, but he knows that it's the fact that Lennie was just killed (page 107)

Allegory Definition: When a book or story can be interpreted to Reveal a broader message about real world issues

Examples of allegory This book can be interpreted as people are stuck in their own ways and only look out for themselves, except Lennie, who is the character that everybody else describes as crazy or stupid Lennie thinks about the burden that he is to George and talks about running away (page 104) He says that he'll run into a cave because George doesn't want or need him anymore
