Do Now: 02/28-29 What is the function of slow fibers? What exercises build slow fibers? Why do muscles burn after extended activity? What process does this signify?

Cellular Respiration Review Take out your questions on cellular respiration, we will review some of the most important information. Remember, it is your job to have mastered biology standards. This should serve solely as a review.

Last Class We discussed how muscles are used, the process of getting oxygen to the muscles, how to build muscle and how oxygen depletion affects muscles. How did we practice this? Brief notes on ATP-ADP cycle, training muscle and anaerobic metabolism. Lunge exploration CYR questions # 11-14

Today’s Objective Knowledge: How a muscle is built How different types of exercise effect muscles How steroids effect muscles Skills: Ability to identify how a muscle will react to different types of exercise

Big Idea Knowing how to strengthen a muscle will be helpful to any of the students who participate in sports and also to any that plan on leading a healthy life-style. Knowing the risks associated with steroids will also help them to make the correct decision if they consider that option in the future.

Atrophy Last class we talked about how to build muscle Slow Fibers Fast Fibers What happens if I’m not building or sustaining muscle? If you don’t use muscles for an extended period of time, then you will lose them. They will lose actin and myosin and become weaker, turn into fat, and degrade in a process called atrophy.

Examples of atrophy Muscle atrophy due to injury, bedridden atrophy Prisoner of war, muscle atrophy due to malnutrition

Steriods

Be Like Arnold… Steroids work because they look a lot like testosterone and stimulate the growth of actin and myosin in the muscles. More action and myosin means stronger muscles.

Danger However, it comes with risks: kidney problems, liver problems, baldness, sterility, acne and much more.

Practice your Knowledge. Make a thought map of different types of exercise or lack of exercise and their effects on the body to focus on the difference between stamina and strength training. You should include how steriods would effect each type of training.
