Adding and Subtracting Decimals in a Real World Context Alignment Lesson

Distance Covered Find day 35, “Distance Covered” William walked 1.25 miles to work, 0.9 miles to the store, and 0.47 miles home. Rebecca ran 2.75 miles for exercise at the school track. Who covered more distance? How much more distance did that person cover? Individually….. Reread the problem and determine what the problem is asking you to find. Predict/estimate the solution. Solve the problem using 3 different representations of pictures, words and numbers. Review the solution and determine if it is reasonable.

Working together In groups of 2 to 3 students, share your response with your group members Each group will then create a “Final Copy” on chart paper of the strategy you choose to share in your group. It can be one of your group member’s strategies or a combination of all strategies. When everyone is done, we will share your final copies with the whole group

As students share, answer these…. What connections do you notice between the different representations? Which representation appeals the most to you? Why? How do different representations help you make sense of the problem?
