Agenda SSR Turn in Reading Logs (15 points) Match Up Activity Print Advertisements

Match Up Everyone has a section of a print advertisement. Some people have the ads design and others have headlines. When I say to, find the person that you believe has the other part of your advertisement. If you have the section with the picture try to find the person that has the words to go with it. If you have the words try to find the person with the picture that matches. When you find your partner raise your hands and I will tell you if you are right or if you need to keep looking. When you get it right give your partner a word of encouragement and return to your seat.

Print Advertisements Print advertising is extremely effective because it engages the brain. Reading requires the brain to work harder and store the information received as a memory. Because print ads generally require viewers to read, they are more likely to be remembered.

3 Parts of a Print Ad Headline- grabs the attention much like a newspaper's headline. An advertising headline is designed to be the first copy (written words) the potential customer reads. Bold, large font size and various colors are some of the methods used to make the headline stand out from copy.

3 Parts of a Print Ad Print Design- the images shown within an advertisement. Good print designs stand out to the person viewing them and draw them to read the advertisement.

3 Parts of a Print Ad Copy- the main text of an advertisement.

How Do Print Ads Catch Our Eyes? Rule of Thirds- an image is divided into three sections (vertically and horizontally); points of intersection are used as important visual elements.

The Fine Print Companies are required by law to disclose information about their product that could be harmful to their sales. “Health warnings”, “results may vary”, “when combined with diet and exercise” Advertisers do not want their audience to focus on negative things about their product, so they use design to draw your attention away from negative information.

Does the Surgeon General’s Warning fall in an eye-catching place? Where does the advertisement draw your eye? What other things make this advertisement appealing?

Dissecting Print Ads We are going to look closely at more advertisements. For each of the following ads decide who the audience is, how they use design to sell their product, and look for fine print.
