Presentation transcript:

Reproduction and Growth Plants: Reproduction and Growth (Plants Gone Wild)

sexual (flowering plants) alternation of generations - a life cycle of both haploid and diploid generations (mosses and ferns)

Diploid = multicellular plant produces spores (through meiosis) Haploid = gametophytes will make gametes (“sperm” / “egg”)

Reproductive Anatomy flowering plants have male and female “parts” The Flower - sepals Petals reproductive parts

Sepal – enclose flower before it opens protection

Petals – attract pollinators

Male and Female Parts Male part: STAMEN filament (stalk) anther (tip) Female part: PISTIL stigma (sticky tip) style (stalk) ovary (base)

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of various Pollen Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of various Pollen. Public domain image reference: Dartmouth Electron Microscope Facility, Dartmouth College

Seeds = fertilized zygotes (would become a new plant)

Fruits and Seeds Ovule is fertilized, and grows to become seed, protected by seed coat Fruits are mature ovaries, to protect and disperse seeds.
