Presentation transcript:

Using Up Nonrenewable Resources Any resource that cannot be naturally replenished. Ex: Fossil fuels: Oil Natural gas Coal

Agriculture (Farming) In order to farm, large areas of native plants must be removed.

An increase in the average temperature of the Earth. Global Warming An increase in the average temperature of the Earth.

Causes of Global Warming? Global warming is caused by a build-up of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide. Most scientists believe this is caused by human activity. Some believe that it is a natural variation in the climate cycle.

Global Warming vs. Climate Change is the increase of the Earth’s average surface temperature due to a build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. CLIMATE CHANGE is a broader term that refers to long-term changes in climate, including average temperature and precipitation.

Effects of Global Warming…

Glacial melting

Rising sea levels

Animals in danger of extinction

Change or Die In such a rapidly changing world, organisms must adapt quickly to survive.

Two types of adaptation: 1) Accommodation An individual can alter its behavior to help it survive.

An entire species can gradually change its genetic makeup. 2) Evolution An entire species can gradually change its genetic makeup. Before After

Extinction If a species cannot adapt in time, it may go extinct, meaning the species is gone for good! Ex: dinosaurs

What does endangered mean? The species is not yet extinct, but there aren’t many members left alive. It is “in danger” of going extinct.

Human activity is causing a great loss of our planet’s biodiversity!

What Is Biodiversity? The total variety of living organisms in an ecosystem.

Why should we care? We get medicine, building materials, foods, and more from the other organisms on this planet. Once we lose one species, there is no way to know if that species could have offered us a cure to HIV/ cancer/ etc.
