I Peter 3:18-22 Christ: Died for sins once for all Just for the unjust Brought us to God Was put to death in the flesh Made alive in the spirit Went in the spirit to make proclamation to the spirits now in prison Resurrected Went into heaven At God’s right hand where angels, authorities and powers are subjected to Him

Spirits “spirits”: pneuma – a movement of air; to breathe; the wind, spirit The breath breathed by God into man and again returning to God, the spiritual entity in man Jesus WAS put to death in the flesh, but His spirit was alive IN His spirit, He went to spirits in prison and made proclamation SOMEWHERE between His death and resurrection Eph. 4:8-10 Jesus did NOT go to spirits of dead people to preach the gospel to them and give a second chance for salvation. NO PERGUTORY

Spirits These spirits had been disobedient during the construction of the ark I Pet. 3:20 They were DEAD I Pet. 3:20 Context: suffering for what is right and good Jesus DID that and made a proclamation about it His resurrection and ascension showed victory over unjust suffering HIS obedience is contrasted with the spirits’ disobedience

Cross References 2 Pet. 2:4-9 There was a time when angels sinned and God committed them to pits of darkness reserved for judgment (spirits proclaimed to?) Jude 5-7 Jude wrote of angels being kept in bonds under darkness for judgment (spirits?) Sodom and Gomorrah are compared (spirits?) Gen. 6 Noah builds an ark and only he and his family are righteous on the whole earth The ark saved 8 people from judgment by bringing them through the water (spirits of disobedient?)

Baptism “baptism”: a dipping or sinking, a result of sincere repentance. Zod. When our faith is identified with Him in the purpose of His crucifixion, burial and resurrection, a revolution takes place in our personality. The old body is crucified and buried as if it were an old garment. (Rom. 6:6) “As the waters of the flood removed the old world of wickedness from the godly, so the waters of baptism remove the filth of the old man. The flood is a macrocosm of what takes place in baptism.” Salvation is new birth, by faith, through Jesus’ resurrection

I Peter 4 Jesus suffered in the flesh, to bring us to God and righteousness. Our Purpose: to cease from sin and live righteous lives for God’s will, not our own. I Pet. 4:2 Rom. 6:6-11 I Pet. 4:3-5 Recipients had lived in the past like other people around them, so have all believers Believers do not do what they USED to do and the unsaved are surprised by that and malign them. We walk in newness of life! Unsaved will give an account to God for what they say about the saints

I Peter 4 I Pet. 4:6-11 The gospel was preached to the dead – believers who have died They are dead to the flesh but ALIVE in the spirit End is near so be self-controlled and sober. (1:13) Serve one another with the spiritual gifts God gives each believer I Pet. 4:10 Serve with God’s strength I Pet. 4:11 Speak using God’s Words I Pet. 4:11 Result: God is glorified I Pet. 4:11

I Peter 4 I Peter 4:12-19 Unjust Suffering!!! Suffering for Christ’s sake results in sharing His glory 4:13 Judgment begins with God’s household 4:17 Those who don’t obey the gospel will also be judged 4:17 Believers are to entrust their souls to their faithful Creator 4:19 Jesus kept entrusting Himself to the faithful, righteous and impartial Judge. I Peter 2:23

Will Of God Live for the will of God 4:2 Live in the spirit according to the will of God 4:6 Suffering is part of the will of God 4:19 Is the Will of God a mystery we cannot know? If I am suffering unjustly, does that mean I have missed the will of God? HOW do I entrust myself, continually, to the Faithful One who judges righteously and impartially? What does that look like?
