Southern Advantages They wanted to show the world that they were only defending their homes from the North. Commanding Generals General Robert E. Lee General McClellan Commander of the Confederate Army from 1862-1865 Most famous General of the Civil War. Offered command of the US Army but refused to fight his home state of Virginia. Commander of the Northern Army (Army of the Potomac) Will lose command after the Battle of Antietam. Will run for President against Lincoln in 1864.
Fort Sumter A Union held fort was attacked in South Carolina and lasted in a 34 hour siege. Resulted in a Confederate victory. Analyze: The first battle results in a CONFEDERATE victory … why is this important?
Battle of Antietam For the First time EVER, battlefield pictures reach the public and show them the real sites of war. Deadliest single day of the Civil War Late 1862 General Lee invades Maryland. Over 6,000 soldiers killed. Lee retreats but McClellan does not try to finish off the South. Analyze: What are the pros and cons to having battle field images?
Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln used the Union victory at Antietam to announce the Emancipation Proclamation. With a Death Toll so high he wanted to give the war a greater moral purpose. If the war was to end slavery, it would prevent England and France from joining the South (both condemned slavery). Freed slaves in all rebelling states (but not the border states that stayed loyal to the Union!?). Analyze: Why did Lincoln only free the slaves in the REBELLING states?
Battle of Vicksburg In May and June of 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant would lay siege on Vicksburg. This brilliant military campaign led to the North gaining control of the Mississippi River, effectively splitting the South in half. Remember: Gaining control of the Mississippi River was part of what plan?

1863: Turning Point of the War… The South was slowly being strangled by the Northern blockade. The Battle of Gettysburg – In the summer of 1863, Lee moves north in a bold attempt to cute off Washington, D.C. from the rest of the union. After 3 days of heavy fighting, Lee retreats. This battle was the turning point of the war Lee’s army suffered heavy casualties and was never again able to go on the offensive. This would later be the sight of Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address. Analyze: What do we mean when we say turning point?
